Nestled in the Welsh countryside near to the coast, Abakhan at Mostyn is not just your standard mercy dash to stock up on your fabric stash. As I drove through country lanes to get there on a rainy Sunday morning, I was mentally reeling off what I was looking for when I got there…it didn’t disappoint; you could easily while away a few hours there. There is ample parking when you arrive, different buildings on site for different crafts (I didn’t get chance to look in the wool or papercraft areas but from the windows they looked just as inviting as the fabric building), and a play area for the kids in a courtyard next to a lovely café – I was ready for breakfast when I arrived and their Welsh breakfast did not disappoint…nor did the cakes; how I resisted remains a mystery! The café itself is light spacious and a great place to enjoy your coffee; it even has free wifi. Just off the café you’ll find a gift shop with some fabulous ideas and gifts – needless to say I didn’t leave there empty handed either!
But let’s not forget the main reason for the visit…the fabric! Downstairs there are rolls and rolls of beautiful upholstery and waxed fabric and so many accessories, accompaniments and trims; upstairs is awash with even more dressmaking and craft fabric, trims galore and even a pattern area where you can sit and look through the pattern books and even have a coffee from the well placed coffee machine! (did they know I was coming?!)
The fabrics are sectioned off into fabric types and colours, which was really helpful to hone in on exactly what you need. The choice is really good and the staff there are so helpful if you can’t find what you are looking for. At the other end of the sales floor there are more zips, trims and accessories than you can shake a ham at – I managed to get everything on my list…and more, oops! The disabled access up to the first floor was interesting to say the least as it was a moving platform, but really accessible!
There are a variety of regular workshops on site so you could easily make a day of it if there is a particular workshop that takes your fancy, but even if you want to pop over for a browse, you’re close to both Chester and the beautiful North Wales coast. It was my first visit and it definitely won’t be my last!
