This beautiful Thelma Dress pattern from Love Sewing Magazine has been in my To Make pile for a few months now (isn’t everything?!) but only because I couldn’t decide on the perfect fabric to use. However my lovely friend Lynsey gifted some beautiful multi coloured spotty cotton to me recently, which was perfect!
The pattern is absolutely beautiful and can be made in a dress or top; I cut out a dress in size 18 months, although it goes up to 5 years – it looks so tiny in the baby sizes! The Thelma has got the most gorgeous puffy gathered sleeves and peter pan collar, as well as the yoke-like detail in the bodice. You’re spoilt for choice if you make yours from contrasting fabric – you could have a contrast collar to the rest of the dress, or how about the bodice in one fabric and the collar matching the skirt?
The pattern was really quick to construct, even for slow little me! I did find there were a couple of omissions in the instructions, which meant I needed to guess what I was supposed to be doing next, but if you’ve made one or two items, it’s pretty straightforward to work out.
I absolutely adored all of the gathering detail in both the skirt and the sleeves; it adds to the cuteness of the dress. You’ll see I plumped for ready made white bias binding on the ends of the sleeves for a tiny bit of detail and I think this adds a really nice touch. You could also buy (or make, but we all know I love a cheaty little shortcut when I can!) some insertion piping – I didn’t have enough when I whipped this up but I’d consider it again if I make it again.
Do you know what I love most of all though? The little press stud fastening; it makes it so much easier to wrestle little ones into when you haven’t got fiddly fastenings.
So this one is all ready to be sent over to Italy for little S – the cotton will be nice and cool to wear…even at the end of September the temperature is still high in the day (23-25 degrees Celsius). Can you believe I’ve not sewn for her since I made the Minnie Mouse Baby Dress and Nappy Cover last Summer?
