Gutermann Marrekesch Deer and Doe Datura

I love a happy post day…receiving the  Marrekesch Collection swatch book from the lovely people at Gutermann recently was great to get home to. Leafing through sample after sample of beautifully busy  prints and bold, rich colours took me from my own living room to Morocco. Using a palette of navy, pale pink and pale sage green with a range of gorgeous jewel accent colours, the range work so well together and the combinations appear endless!

I picked out a beautiful classic navy fabric with a striking white pattern (trust me, getting to one fabric was tough – I fell a little bit in love with all of the navy fabrics!) Having seen the collection made up in a range of cushions and other beautiful homewares, I decided to use mine to make a Deer and Doe Datura Blouse. This is now the third I’ve added to my wardrobe (you can find the others here and here) – they are the comfiest tops to wear (I love mine equally with a pencil skirt for work as I do paired with a pair of dark blue jeans at the weekend). The pattern is an absolute delight to work from, the instructions fantastic and the cut and fit of the top, perfect!

Usually I would pick a cotton lawn for a Datura as it creases a little less than this 100% cotton however I fell in love with the print as much as how cool I knew it would keep me on a Summer’s day and so I went to work. The fabric itself is great quality and really easy and enjoyable to work with, particularly using it for bias binding for the edge too! From a crease perspective, I’d be lying if I said it didn’t crease completely but after a day of wearing it, I could quite feasibly put it back on the hanger ready to wear again without having to re-iron it.

I went for a hybrid of the two versions, not using the cut out yoke version, yet not adding a Peter Pan collar, and I’m really pleased with the simplicity and casualness of the top. Again, I really enjoyed the matching bias bound bottom edge – it’s the perfect way to finish the garment. You’ll also see I used more plastic snap fasteners – I prefer them to buttons both for ease of closing behind my back and comfort when you’re sitting.
